Second World Congress on Fetal Origins of Adult Disease. Brighton Centre, UK. "The Fetal Origins of Adult Disease concept (FOAD) concept is bringing new insights into pathogenesis. Poor fetal growth and small size at birth are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and some neurological disorders in adult life. The epidemiological studies which showed this have now been extensively replicated. They have led to the hypothesis that these disorders originate through unbalanced nutrition in utero and in infancy."
